The surrounding area was dry, dry, dry, woth lots of saguaro cactus sprouting here and there. A "monsoon" had hit the Phoenix area the day before we arrived -- dropping up to 2 inches in spots in 24 hours in some spots -- and that heavy rain did damage to more than a few saguaros, whose shallow roots don;t easily support its height when the ground gets soft. We saw many saguaro propped up on four sides with special poles designed to protect the cactus skin during the recovery.
