Carl Schultz finds reverse as he backs his 1927 Miller tribute car toward the garage after the Saturday morning session around the 2-mile California Speedway oval. The replica was built in 2007. Owner-driver Carl Schulz told me he got the car up to about 60 mph but didn't want to go faster for fear of damaging the car. He did enjoy saying he passed Bobby Unser seven times during the morning run. I told him not to mention that Unser had thrown a rod only three laps in and had pulled off the racing line.
